I hired Orion specifically for his *EXTREME* process-organizational skills, to operate mostly independently of me, and to rollout a new Security Monitoring uplift program (not just a singular project, but many projects, overhauling nearly every aspect of what we do and how we do it).

Frankly, I was too busy tied up with daily operations and management issues and COULD NOT have deployed this program successfully as a side-activity of my current role... I NEEDED a separate party to drive that effort. Orion had already shown his skill and capability to do just that, and so I hired him and trusted him to drive this effort that was integral to my overall service.

Additionally, at the time I hired him, I asked him to lead the data on-boarding team, but by the time he actually transitioned to my team, the on-boarding team had transitioned, and the Audit Response team had lost their manager.

Interestingly, he also got the on-boarding team mostly organized- with new process and tools in place in the 1-2 months before he joined me- then he completely overhauled how the Audit Response team operate. By all objective measures, he's delivered excellence.

NOTE: His progress on SecMon-specific uplift is actually exactly where I expected it to be (even if that expectation in hindsight was really excessive): but his progress with both Log On-boarding and Audit Response also has far exceeded my expectations, especially given that both were side-projects for him.

Aside from WHAT Orion has delivered (excellence), there is HOW Orion has delivered. To his credit, every time I have suggested to Orion an alternative way to view a situation, or have provided additional context, he immediately approached the situation differently. I can honestly say he's been much more malleable in his approach than anyone else I've ever met in a work context. This is not to say he's simply caved in, agreeing with everything I say. That is definitely not the case. Only that he has taken feedback in a way few people even can, and the end result of that interchange between his drive for excellence and my influence toward relativism has resulted in what I think is absolutely optimum output, not just for him, but for the team as a whole.”
